Info: Machu Picchu (Peru) Machu Picchu, or Old Peak, is one of the most famous tourist attractions in South America and was declared a UNESCO World Cultural Heritage site in 1983. The well-preserved ruins of this Inca city rises 7,940 ft above sea level and is situated on a mountain ridge above the Urubamba Valley in Peru, which is 50 mi northwest of Cusco.
Most archaeologists believe that Machu Picchu was built as an estate for the Inca emperor Pachacuti, around 1400 AD. Due to its hidden location, Machu Picchu remained hidden from the Spanish conquerors of the Inca Empire until it was rediscovered, practically intact, by Hiram Bingham in 1911. Today, most of the site is in its original state, however due to weather and erosion roughly 30% of the outlying buildings have been reconstructed.
The easiest way to access Machu Picchu is by train. For those looking for more of a challenge, it is possible to hike for 1 or 4 days on the historic Inca Trail. Voted in an online poll in 2007, Machu Picchu is now recognized on the list of New Seven Wonders of the World.
